Carvings of Life

Within the massive buildings of Angkor Wat there is intricacy and detail. Some of the most important are the bas reliefs on all four sides of the lower gallery. There are over 600 metres of these stunning, two-metre high sandstone carvings. They depict various cultural, religious and battle stories.

This relief depicts a scene from Parade of King Suryavarman II, the builder of Angkor Wat.

Note how the sandstone has become polished after millions of hands touching them over nearly 1000 years.

Photography cannot do these massive works of art justice; you have to walk their lengths in awe to get a sense of their majesty and intricacy.
